Author's Interview:
Young: Tell us about your Latest Book/Book about to be released? Release Date? And can you give us a teaser?
Emily Mims (E.M.): ‘Unexpected Assets’ is part of the Texas Hill Country series and features badly scarred wounded warrior Jason Donahue and his love Emily Riley, both introduced in ‘Daughter of Valor’. Emily can see past Jason’s scars to the real man, but she’s keeping a secret from him that has the potential to shatter everything that they share.
Young: What other books/short stories have you written?
E.M.: Back in the eighties I wrote eighteen books for Candlelight Ecstasy Romance under the pen name Emily Elliott. After a long hiatus, I started writing again and have just completed the ninth story in the Texas Hill Country series, and am beginning work on a new series set in the Appalachian bluegrass music scene. And Boroughs has re-released three of my backlist in addition to my current work
Young: Do you publish in e-book, print, or both?
E.M.: Both At this current time, my books, well book is only available in print, but my forthcoming released and the ones lined up after that, are to be in both.
Young: Where can readers find your books?
E.M.: Amazon, Nook, Smashwords, and Allromance
Young: What do you think are the biggest challenges for the type of writing that you do?
E.M.: Telling a fresh story that has not been told countless times before.
Young: How did you get started in writing?
E.M.: I wrote my first book on a dare. I had just thrown a poorly-written romance across the floor and said I could have done a better job. My husband flipped through the book, agreed with me and dared me to do so.
Young: Where and How can readers get in touch with you?
E.M.: www.emilymims.com, www.facebook.com/EmilyMimsAuthor, #EmilyMimsAuthor
Young: So with your latest work released/or being released, what comes next? What can we expect from you in the future?
E.M.: My latest book, ‘A Gift of Hope’ came out in October. Its sequel will be out soon and has two characters who will be heroes in the upcoming Appalachian series.
Young: How much of your personality and life experiences are in your writing?
E.M.: In the original books, not so much. The Texas Hill Country series is set in a small community much like the one where our lake house is located and the characters much like our neighbors and friends there.
Young: Do you have a set schedule for writing or do you just go with the flow?
E.M.: I write in the afternoons and early evening. I don’t write well early in the morning or late at night.
Young: What is your routine once you start writing a book?
E.M.: I am a ‘plotter’. I write a detailed plot of the story by chapter, and then sit down with the plot on my work station and write the book from there.
Young: What about you in general? What is it that makes you tick? Makes you you? Things you like to do and what prompted you into writing?
E.M.: I met the love of my life when I was eighteen and accepted his proposal after five days. We have been married now almost forty five years. I taught high school science for thirty nine years and raised two of the finest men you’d ever hope to meet. I play five musical instruments and play in two performing groups. I love Mexican food, traveling, and driving eighty five miles an hour. And I absolutely love to write.
Young: Among your own books, have you a favourite book? Favourite Hero or Heroine?
E.M.: My favorite book is whatever one I’m working on at that moment. My favorite heroine is probably Angie Baxter of ‘Never and Always’. She put up with years of abuse to stay with the child of her heart.
Young: Where do you see yourself in five years?
E.M.: Still writing books and still having fun!
Young: What kind of research do you when writing one of your works?
E.M.: If I’m portraying someone in a particular profession I interview someone in that profession. I’ve talked to everyone from belly dancers to FBI agents and have gone into a soap maker’s kitchen and learned to make soap. I use the Internet a lot and for all things military I have my Army captain son on speed dial.
Young: What does your significant other think of your writing?
E.M.: He has a T-shirt that says ‘I make love to a romance writer’.
Young: Do you ever ask them for advice or ideas to go into your works?
E.M.: No, but his sweet and loving personality shows up often in my heroes.
Young: Have you ever experienced Writer's Block? If so how did you work through it?
E.M.: Thankfully, no.
Young:Who are some of your favourite authors to read?
E.M.: I enjoy a number of romance authors, in particular my fellow Boroughs authors. And I never miss a Nora Roberts.
Young: Anything else you'd like to tell our readers?
E.M.: Thank you all for being our readers! You make it all worthwhile.
Young: Lastly do you have any words of encouragement for unpublished writers?
E.M.: Do not, do not, do not ever let someone tell you that you cannot write a book. If a chemistry teacher from Texas can sell twenty six books and counting, you can too!
EXCERPT:
“Well, that explains it, then,” Mr. Harrington said.
“Explains what, Mr. Harrington?” Jason was puzzled and didn’t even try to hide it.
“Why you’re so interested in Emily. She and that money of hers could go a long way toward helping you catch up financially, as you put it.”
Jason felt the blood drain from his head. Emily exchanged a frantic look with her sister. “I-I’m sorry, sir,” he stammered. “What did you say?”
“I said that Emily and that money of hers could go a long way.”
Jason just stared at the old man for a minute. “What money, Mr. Harrington?”
“Oh, don’t be ridiculous, young man. The trust fund. The Harrington trust fund. She’s bound to have told you about it.”
He lifted his chin and looked the old man in the eye. “I didn’t know Emily had a trust fund. She’s never mentioned it to me.” He looked at Emily across the table. “You’ve never said a word, Emily. Have you?”
