"When it is dark enough, you can see the stars."
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Before I knew it, Eid ul-Fitr was upon us. Andy and I were up early to join the Household members for a hearty breaking of fast meal. Men, women and children ate together; it was a joyous celebration with well wishes of Eid Mubarak. The festivities lasted for three days. The first day of celebration was the most important. The Kosk’s big party would be held that evening in the grand ballroom. Servants, Abds and caterers were busily transforming the huge hall into a festive arena.
Vendors delivered the finest cuts of meats, fresh herbs and vegetables, to the kitchen entrance. Florists arrived at 9:00 a.m. to decorate the house and gardens. Tents were erected and workmen built an open-air dance floor and podium for musicians and belly dancers who would provide the evening’s entertainment. Electricians set up fairy lights in the garden and gazebo. It seemed the Gods had taken a sparkling wand and waved it, turning the Kosk into a Magic Kingdom where Snow White, Cinderella, Princess Jasmine and all their Princes would feel right at home.
Makeover
This was the day of the Kosk women's makeover debut. Professional beauticians provided facials and beauty treatments for the ladies while I checked accessories, shoes and clothes. As soon as each finished with hair and make-up, I helped them dress, detailing their ensembles. It was a considerable amount of work to style sixteen women in four hours. My enthusiasm more than made up for my lack of training as a professional stylist.
I absorbed everything with adolescent enthusiasm. The women and I were pleased with the results. Their husbands congratulated them on their beauty and style. I felt satisfied and happy that I had managed to bring more joy into their lives.
Shall We Dance
I danced with several of the Harem women whom I had befriended. Shiya, Nasreen and Ghaniyah danced with Andy and me, as a group. I had such a wonderful evening. I completely forgot about the Nubian, until the evening was drawing to a close.
I noticed the black gentleman bidding the Hadrah and his wives farewell. He leaned over to whisper something in Hakim’s ear before Ghali pulled up in his silver Cabriolet. He saw me, smiled and waved goodnight before disappearing down the driveway.
I slept well that night, knowing I had accomplished another milestone in my fashion future. I looked out my balcony and couldn't help admiring the beautiful stars twinkling against the expansive night sky.
Hidden beneath the dark gloomy burkas, abayas and hijabs were plenty of brightly colored twinkling stars. These stars, these heavenly beauties, were the harem women. I was so gratefully glad to have helped bring out their brightness on this starry, starry night.
